15 years ago, Wiz Khalifa solidified his mixtape legacy with the release of Kush & Orange Juice, and he returned with a sequel to the classic project earlier this year.
The Pittsburgh native traveled to the NPR offices to make his Tiny Desk Concert debut on Tuesday (June 10), which found Wiz rocking a Doggystyle album t-shirt paying homage to Snoop Dogg, while he leaned fully into his weed-friendly Kush & OJ series for the performance.
Backed by live drums, keys and a guitar, Khalifa breezed through career-spanning cuts like “Red Eye,” “Mezmorized” and “The Kid Frankie.” The high water mark came with the performance’s magnum opus when Wiz gave “Never Been” a rock-tinged makeover, which reimagined the Kush & OJ staple.
He wrapped with the starry stoner anthem “Up” and “Crime Bud and Women.” Before the performance came to a close, Khalifa was overcome with emotion as his tear ducts began to swell.
The Taylor Gang honcho took off his shades to wipe his tears before uttering to the audience, “Y’all made me Cry! F—k y’all.”
According to NPR, Wiz had plenty of special guests in the building, including his father. Khalifa follows E-40’s Tiny Desk appearance as the series looks to honor genre-shifting albums that have shaped music’s landscape for Black Month Music.
