Slick Rick will soon drop off his first new body of work since 1999. On Thursday (May 15), Rick announced he’ll be delivering the follow-up to The Art of Storytelling on June 13. The new album, titled Victory, will be a visual album executive-produced by Idris Elba. The album will be accompanied by a 30-minute short film that was directed by Meji Alabi. The film will then premier at SXSW London June 7, as well as the Tribeca Festival on June 13.
As for the actual album, it will include appearances from Nas, Estelle and Giggs. According to a press release, the project was four years in the making, and was written and recorded between Rick’s birth place of London and in France.
“Victory is all about perseverance, storytelling, imagination and evolution,” Rick said in a statement. “A visual blend of art and heart — a sonic journey that reflects where I’ve been and where I’m going. Victory isn’t just music — it’s a bold in your face statement, showcasing British artistry at its finest!”
Idris Elba added, “Working with Slick Rick … back home in the U.K., and then offering the world of hip-hop something amazing has been a blessing. It’s literally a gift!”
Nas also said in a statement, “Slick Rick and I have a long history of working together, so it was great to get back in the studio with him to create this new record. He has been such an influential figure in hip-hop culture, and I look forward to him sharing this project with the next generation of fans.”
Victory was further teased with a cinematic black-and white trailer. Check it out below.
